White South Africans Rally in Support of Trump’s Claims of Racism

Protest in Pretoria

Hundreds of white South Africans gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria on Saturday to support former U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims that they are victims of racism. The protesters, many from the Afrikaner community, held signs praising Trump and denouncing South African laws they believe discriminate against the white minority.

Trump’s Executive Order

Trump recently signed an executive order cutting aid to South Africa’s Black-led government, alleging that Afrikaners face discrimination. The order particularly criticized a law allowing land expropriation without compensation, which Trump claimed unfairly targets white farmers. The South African government has denied these allegations, calling Trump’s statements misleading.

Government’s Response

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa defended the land reform law, stating that it does not permit arbitrary land seizures. He emphasized that forced removals will never be allowed again, referencing the history of Black South Africans being dispossessed during apartheid and colonial rule. The law, according to the government, aims to address racial inequality in land ownership.

Broader Issues Raised

Protesters also criticized South Africa’s affirmative action policies, known as Black Economic Empowerment, which have been in place since the end of apartheid in 1994. These policies aim to improve opportunities for Black South Africans but have been a point of frustration for some white citizens.

Elon Musk’s Criticism

Elon Musk, a South African-born businessman and Trump supporter, has also accused the South African government of being anti-white. His company, Starlink, recently failed to obtain a license in the country due to affirmative action requirements.

Political Landscape

Despite racial tensions, South Africa has largely maintained racial reconciliation since the end of apartheid. The current government consists of a coalition of Black- and white-led parties working together. However, the debate over land ownership and economic policies remains a key issue in the country’s political landscape.
